Claude saved me $50+ a month this week

Glad you're here for my first newsletter, I hope to provide as much value as possible for you and genuinely help you get the most out of AI.

I don't know if you've noticed but AI is advancing extremely quickly, I mean very quickly. It almost feels like a fever dream. When I was using ChatGPT only a couple years ago, it could barely write a proper email, and don't get me started on coding capability, yikes.

And now AI can do the work of a $100,000 software team.

But in the grand scheme of things it's still early. The fact that you are reading this very sentence means that you are ahead of 87.5% of people (yes that's a real stat).

Anyway, enough yapping from me, let's get into it.

Fable 5 stays free until July 19 — the third extension in five weeks

If you're not familiar with Fable 5, it's basically the smartest AI on the planet right now. The productivity I have had with this thing is unmatched. I built 2 entire apps that would have cost me $50+ a month and I built them in a couple of hours (keep scrolling for all the details). But anyway, Anthropic, the company that runs Claude, gave users a week to use this thing and last minute said you know what, let's extend it for another week. Cut to the end of that week and guess what? They extended Claude Fable 5's free access for paid users AGAIN.

Why, you might ask? Because their competitor OpenAI (ChatGPT) launched their newest model that directly competes with Fable 5. (I personally don't think it's comparable, but benchmarks do say so.) So to stop people mass canceling their subscription to move over to ChatGPT/Codex they decided to last minute extend it. People have canceled dates over this (not joking).

My guess is that Anthropic will make it permanent at the end of this week (but I still recommend getting the most out of it before July 19).

OpenAI ships GPT-5.6: Sol, Terra & Luna

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT & Codex (OpenAI's version of Claude Code), just dropped their own extremely smart models that are comparable to Claude Fable 5. I don't want to bore you with all the benchmarks and specs so here is the simple breakdown.

The three models are:

• Sol — the intelligent flagship
• Terra — balanced middle
• Luna — cheap and fast

Price per million tokens:

Sol $5/$30 vs Fable 5's $10/$50 — so half price on input, 40% cheaper on output. Luna is $1/$6 — roughly a tenth of Fable's cost.

Terra is the quiet win: GPT-5.5-level performance at about half the price, same brain, half the bill.

Now the burning question I know some of you might be asking:
Should I use GPT or Claude?

I honestly think it depends on what you use it for. Codex is way faster but "thinks" less and isn't as intelligent on some benchmarks.
Claude Fable 5 is 2x more expensive than GPT Sol and 40% slower. So honestly if your work is very basic and doesn't require intense critical thinking then I would look at switching to GPT. Personally though, I find Claude in general just reasons and thinks better and GPT is the worker who just tries to get something done as quickly as possible.

If you have the ability to use both like me, then use Claude as the planner and GPT as the executor. I have found this is the best method.

I would watch out still and definitely not give GPT full access to your computer yet, as AI investor Matt Shumer posted on X that GPT-5.6 Sol had accidentally deleted nearly all files on his Mac 😬

The simple verdict

ChatGPT is faster and cheaper; Claude reasons and codes better and is safer to let loose.

OpenAI releases ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's new agentic "work" mode inside ChatGPT, launched July 9, 2026 alongside general availability of the GPT‑5.6 model family. It sits as a third mode next to plain Chat and Codex:

• Chat — questions, search, brainstorming, quick conversational help.
• Work — takes on longer research and creates finished docs, spreadsheets, slides and reports; can stay on a project for hours, working semi-independently.
• Codex — dedicated software-development/coding agent (unchanged remit, upgraded model).

It's basically OpenAI's version of Anthropic's Claude Cowork — a more accessible, everyday-work-focused agent platform built on Codex's underlying agent engine.

If you're a non-technical business owner, start with ChatGPT Work — it's fast, cheap ($0 to try, $13–$30 for full access) and easier to understand than Claude Cowork.

This is the homepage. At the top you can see "work" or "codex".

If you switch over to the plugin section on the side, this is where you can add all of your tools that ChatGPT can access (there's 1,400+ of them — Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Salesforce…). If you want to follow along with this demo, install the Gmail plugin.

"Now I'll type this prompt. Look at my Gmail inbox. Let me know if there are any important messages and draft replies for them."

And just a side feature I thought was really cool, which Claude doesn't have, is this little guy called Pet. Use it by typing /pet in the chat input and he'll appear in the bottom corner. You can move him wherever you want, so you can go to another page or watch a YouTube video, and he'll still be in the corner, updating you on how everything's going, and you can go back to the chat whenever.

Now a couple minutes later it's read all my emails and drafted replies to them.

Now type back in "Do this for me every morning at 8 a.m."

This will now run it on a schedule. So ChatGPT will automatically do this daily at 8 a.m. You can have a look at it in the Scheduled Tasks section.

Also this week…

• Decart AI launched Lucy 2.5 for real-time video edits → edits live video as it streams — swap your outfit, change the background, or set something on fire mid-webcam-feed, with basically zero lag.
• China's Moonshot launched Kimi K3 → the biggest open AI model ever released — 2.8 trillion parameters, sees images, handles a million tokens of context, and independently ranked #3 in the world, just behind Fable 5 and GPT-5.6. Six weeks after Fable launched, its near-equal is about to be free to download. The best models are becoming interchangeable; the real skill now is knowing which one to point at which job.

💡 Builder's notes

I built two apps that would have cost me $50+ a month, in 2 hours

The other day a company reached out to me wanting a brand deal (not going to name names), but they offered me some $$ if I posted about their voice-to-text dictation app (basically using your voice as a keyboard). It saves you a lot of time. Seriously, if you're not using one you're wasting time.

But anyway, I did try their app and it's not bad, but the pricing on the other hand is ridiculous. These guys are charging like $50 a month for this stuff, and I obviously declined as I'm not going to promote something I don't even use to you guys.

It had me thinking: what if I just built this $26 million valuation software myself with Fable 5? And it surprised the f*ck out of me.

Claude Fable 5 built me this in 1 hour (and it's better than anything on the market)

It's completely free. It transcribes YouTube and Instagram videos in seconds, writes and rewrites emails, translates, and even has a built-in ChatGPT-type assistant — all free and all local.

Now you're probably wondering what the second app I made was. The second one was a calorie‑tracking app. I don't know if I'm allowed to say this, but it is an exact copy of Cal AI, which makes a ridiculous amount—like a million per month. And really it's pretty simple.

It's just a dashboard with an AI in the background looking at all your meals, so I was like, may as well build this as well. No point paying for it if you can just make it yourself.

And once again, it's completely free and is literally just hosted on Vercel, a free website host.

I built a finance tracker that holds all my subscriptions

I built this with Fable 5 as, like many of you out there, I was losing track of my subscriptions. I got the inspiration for this build from Remy Gaskell.

All my finances in one place and it automatically updates every week.

It checks email receipts, bank statements, Stripe, and writes everything live on the tracker. I can also add stuff manually if needed.

It holds all of my subscriptions cleanly laid out with a one-click option to go and cancel them.

I set up a Claude skill that updates the whole thing and runs every Friday on a schedule.
